Position #1: Venture Capital Associate -- Healthcare

Toucan Capital Fund II, L.P. is a $120 million venture capital fund (SBIC) focused on seed and early-stage life science and advanced technology investments. Toucan Capital Corp. launched its first fund in 1997 and began investing its current fund in August of 2001. Toucan invests nationwide but is especially active in the mid-Atlantic region. Toucan has built one of the largest and most diverse portfolio of stem cell development companies (adult as well as embryonic) in the nation. It has also been an early investor in nanotechnology. Toucan usually serves as a lead or co-lead investor and takes an active, hands-on role working closely with company management to help build its portfolio companies.

Responsibilities and Goals:

The Associate will be located in Toucan’s offices in Bethesda, MD, and will work closely with Toucan’s portfolio companies in the United States and Toucan’s China team. Specific activities will include:

    • Evaluation of target markets for products in medical device, pharmaceutical and biotech.
    • Competitive analyses of other companies developing similar products.
    • Ongoing research on new and emerging medical technologies.
    • Ongoing research and evaluation of potential joint ventures and M&A opportunities.
    • Assistance in formulation and implementation of business plans.
    • Ongoing search for intellectual property licensing opportunities.

Education and Experience

    • Life science degree (MD/PhD/MS) or healthcare degree is required; MBA is definitely a plus; stem cell/tissue engineering experience is preferred but not required.
    • Excellent understanding of healthcare market in the United States and in China.
    • Basic understanding of cell based products currently in clinical trials or under development in academia and in companies.
    • Some familiarity with venture capital and investment models (preferred but not required).
    • Fluency in Chinese is required.

Personal Attributes:

    • Strong research and analytical skills: ability to work with scientific, regulatory, business and financial information.
    • Ability to balance individual initiative with teamwork and appropriate reporting.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse groups (scientists, business managers, investors, and others).
    • Ability to adapt to changing market and investment conditions and priorities.
    • Extensive travel might be required.

    • Stem cell/tissue engineering research experience is preferred but not required.
